Burton & District Snooker League
Round up for the 2019/20 Season
The 2019/20 Burton Snooker League was affected due to COVID19 and was cut short with 5 weeks to go.
Burton Cons A Team were successful in regaining the Premiership title after two years. They also progressed to the semi-finals of the Orem Shield after a tense quarter final again Ivanhoe A, winning 5-4 on a deciding doubles frame. They are now awaiting to see if the competition will be able to be completed. Cons A also fought their way through to the final of The Presidents Handicap team competition after a tough battle in the semi-finals against the Cons B Team. Unfortunately they just lost out to Newhall A in the Round-Robin final that went to sudden death.
Burton Cons B finished in 3rd position in the Premiership and also progressed through to the semi-finals of the Orme Shield. They are also awaiting to see if this prestigious tournament will be completed.
Burton Cons C have adjusted well in their first season playing from the Cons club after transferring from Swad Cons. They have done themselves proud and have finished a very respectable 5th place in the Premiership. They just missed out on a semi-final place in the Orme Shield after being beaten 5-3 by our B team.
Burton Cons D have had better seasons and have unfortunately been relegated to the Second Division. I’m sure they will be fighting again next season to get promotion back to the first division. It’s worth mentioning Greg Read finished in 7th position in the averages on a very respectable 67% after playing 15 matches.
The Cons Club have also had a number of individuals who have performed well this season.
Jonathan Fletcher recorded the highest break of any Cons player in a league match with a lovely 72 against Darren Coady.
Colin Hamer recorded the highest league tournament break with a very impressive 97. What made this even more impressive is that it was made at The Spot On club, whose tables are not in the same league as they tables that we have the pleasure of playing on at The Cons Club.
Owen Jones (A team) and John Shilton (B Team) both fought their way to the final of the Evershed Vase. This is the main singles completion in the Burton Snooker League and it will be great to have the trophy back down the Cons. Once there is a date for the final we will let you know as the final is to be held at the Cons so would be lovely to get a few people down to support both of our club players.
The Authur Edwards Doubles was won in fine style by Owen Jones and Jonathan Fletcher, winning a solid 3-0 in the final against Mark Press and Bobby Cliff from Rolleston B.
The G,S,G Hinsley Handicap Doubles has seen Greg Read and Bill Davidson from our D team progress tremendously well through to the final. As with the majority of the tournaments they are awaiting to see when the final will be played. They are due to play Bobby Cliff and Mark Press and receive a handicap of 21 and will have a great chance of winning the final.
Graham Stevens was successful in winning the averages in the Premiership on 86.84, losing just 5 out of 38 frames. It’s also worth mentioning the Cons Club have 4 players in the top 8 of the averages, John Shilton (4th), Anthony Rushton (7th) and Darren Coady (8th), all of whom will be eligible to play in the Ken Shipton Memorial Trophy if or when this may get played.
Graham Stevens was also successful in retaining the Burton Billiards handicap competition.
A final well done must go to all our players, especially each of the captains for ensuring that we turn out four teams each week.
We now look forward to the season ahead.
